What is Baptism?
Baptism is a physical representation of what Jesus has done for every believer. Furthermore, it is a proclamation by the one being baptized of what Jesus has done for them. At Westside, we practice believers baptism by immersion. This means that we baptize those who have made a conscious decision to follow Jesus by immersing them underneath a body of water. The water represents death and baptism is used to represent the act of being raised to life. The person being baptized is "buried in death" as they are immersed into the water, and "raised to life" as they are pulled out from underneath the water.
Why should I be baptized?
We believe that the answer to that question is two-fold. First and foremost, it is a command from Jesus that every believer be baptized. (Matthew 28:18-20) Secondly, baptism is an opportunity to proclaim the Gospel in a compelling and clear way. We have seen over and over again that people respond to public baptism more than anything in ministry. There is something about someone being courageous enough to be baptized that always compels others to do the same.
